Frequently Asked Questions
Will a Hangar cover restrict airflow to my mini split?
Condenser manufacturers publish a wide range of clearance requirements, but nearly all of them are concerned with the back of the unit, where the coil draws air in. Hangar covers are open at the back, so intake clearance is the same as it was before the cover went on.
The front is louvered, with taller openings positioned directly in front of the fan so discharged air passes straight out rather than building back pressure against it.
To check against your own equipment, find the clearance diagram in your condenser's installation manual and compare it against the interior dimensions listed on each product page.
What size cover do I need?
Measure your outdoor condenser at its widest point, front to back at its deepest point, and top to bottom including any feet or pad it sits on. Compare those numbers against the interior dimensions on each product page, which are the largest unit each cover will enclose. If your unit is under the interior dimension in all three directions, it fits.
By width, the Small fits units up to 39 inches wide, the Medium and Tall up to 42 inches, and the Large up to 48 inches. The Tall is built for stacked and wall-bracket installs, with 57 inches of interior height, or more with a riser. If your unit falls between sizes, size up. Extra clearance improves airflow and doesn't change how the cover looks.
How much space is there above my unit?
The interior dimensions on each product page are the largest unit the cover will enclose, so the space above your condenser is the difference between your unit's height and that interior figure. A 29-inch unit under the Medium cover, which has 35 inches of interior height, leaves six inches of headroom. A unit at the stated maximum leaves almost none.
If your unit is within a few inches of the limit, size up or add a riser, which raises the cover and increases interior height by the height of the riser.
Can I leave the cover on year round?
Yes. Hangar covers are designed to stay in place through all four seasons, with no seasonal removal or storage. The unit runs normally underneath: the back is open to the intake coil and the front is louvered in front of the fan.
This is a meaningful difference from vinyl and fabric wraps, which have to come off before the unit runs in summer because they trap moisture and block airflow.
Will a Hangar cover void my HVAC manufacturer's warranty?
We have never had a customer report a warranty problem caused by installing a cover. That said, we can't speak for your equipment manufacturer and you shouldn't take our word for it.
What manufacturers actually care about is airflow clearance, and most specify a minimum distance around and above the condenser in the installation manual. Check that figure against the interior dimensions of the cover you're considering. If your unit fits with the required clearance on all sides, you're doing what the manual asks. If you're unsure, your installing contractor can confirm it in a minute.
Can the cover mount to a wall?
Yes. Hangar covers mount directly to the wall using integrated keyhole anchors, as long as there's enough depth. Measure from the wall to the front face of your unit, including any bracket it sits on, and compare that against the cover's interior depth.
For condensers mounted on a wall bracket or stacked, the Tall size usually fits best because of its 57-inch interior height, which a riser can extend further. For installs that need more room, we'll be adding wall brackets to the lineup alongside our next generation of covers.
How long does assembly take?
Under 20 minutes for one person with a screwdriver. The cover ships flat with all hardware included, and the panels fasten with integrated stainless steel hardware, so there's nothing to source separately. Mounting to a wall or anchoring to a pad adds a few minutes depending on your surface.
How do I clean the cover?
A damp rag handles most of it, with a little dish soap for anything stubborn. The powder coat is stain resistant, so pollen, dust, and water spots wipe off without special products.
Pressure washing is fine as well, and it's the fastest way to do a full clean at the start of the season.
Where are Hangar covers made?
Hangar Outdoor is based in Beaverton, Oregon. We design the covers here and have them manufactured overseas to our specifications, then handle fulfillment and support from Oregon. Every cover carries our 15-year limited warranty regardless of where it was built.
